What Is Chhath Puja

Chhath Puja is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and his wife, Usha. It is primarily celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. The festival spans four days and involves rigorous rituals, including fasting and offering prayers. Devotees perform the puja to thank the Sun God for sustaining life on Earth and to seek blessings for health, prosperity, and well-being. The rituals are performed on riverbanks or any clean water body, where devotees offer Arghya (water) to the setting and rising sun. Women, especially married ones, observe a strict fast, even abstaining from water, to pray for the longevity and happiness of their family members.

The festival is known for its communal harmony, as people from various backgrounds come together to celebrate. Traditional songs and folk dances are an integral part of the celebrations, adding to the festive spirit. Special prasad (offerings) like Thekua and fruits are prepared and distributed among family and friends. Chhath Puja emphasizes purity, devotion, and the importance of nature in human life.

Chhath Puja Rituals

(Day 1)
Nahay Khay
Devotees take a holy dip in a river or a water body before sunrise. They prepare a special meal "Louki bhaat" and eat only once on this day.
(Day 2)
Lobanda and Kharna
Fasting continues, and devotees consume only one meal during the day. The meal consists of jaggery and wheat-based items.
(Day 3, Evening)
Sandhya Arghya
Devotees offer prayers to the setting sun by the riverbank "Arghya". They stand in the water and offer "aragh (water with rice, fruits, and lighted lamps) to the Sun God. This is a mesmerizing and spiritually charged event.
(Day 4, Morning)
Usha Arghya
On the final day, devotees gather before sunrise to offer prayers to the rising sun. They repeat the process of offering aragh with deep devotion. After this, they break their fast, marking the end of Chhath Puja.

Chhath Puja Process

छठ पूजा करने वाले वर्तियों को कई तरह के नियमों का पालन करना पड़ता है| उनमें से प्रमुख नियम निम्नलिखित है:

  • इस पर्व में पुरे चार दिन शुद्ध कपड़े पहने जाते है| कपड़ो में सिलाई ना होने का पूर्ण रूप से ध्यान रखा जाता है| महिलाएं साड़ी और पुरुस धोती धारण करती है|
  • पुरे चार दिन व्रत करने वाले वर्तियों का जमीन पर सोना अनिवार्य होता है| कम्बल और चटाई का प्रयोग करना उनके इच्छा पे निर्भर करता है|
  • इन दिनों प्याज, लहसुन और मांस-मछली का सेवन करना वर्जित है|
  • पूजा के बाद अपने-अपने सामर्थ्य के अनुसार ब्राम्हणों को भोजन कराया जाता है|
  • इस पावन पर्व में वर्तियों के पास बांस के सूप का होना अनिवार्य है|
  • प्रसाद के तौर पर गेहूँ और गुड़ के आटों से बना ठेकुआ और फलों में केले प्रमुख है|
  • अर्ग देते वक्त सारी वर्तियों के पास गन्ना होना आवश्यक है| गन्ने से भगवान सूर्य को अर्ग दिया जाता है|
Chhath Puja: Festival Of Devotion
  • Take a sacred piece of cloth and spread it over the holy area or the puja sthan.
  • Place the idols of Lord Ganesha and Lord Surya on the red cloth.
  • Start with the puja or worship process. Apply roli (vermillion) on the forehead of Lord Ganesha and Lord Surya.
  • Put Chawal (rice) on the forehead of both idols. Make sure the pieces of rice aren’t broken.
  • Lit incense sticks (Agarbatti) and wave gently in front of the idols.
  • Lit the deepak (use ghee) in front of the idols and offer prasad such as fruits to Lord Ganesha and Lord Surya.
  • Take a little chandan (sandal) in your mouth and keep it until sun rises.
  • After taking the sandal in your mouth, you can either stand still or sit till the sun rises.
  • If possible, visit Surya Mandir (Sun Temple).
  • After sunrise, perform the same puja.
  • Offer holy water to the rising sun.
  • Distribute the khajur (date) among your family members and friends.
